A Blast from the Past

If you take a drive to 6930 S. Western Avenue right here in Oklahoma City at or around 7:30pm, you will truly have a déjà vu moment.   You will find cresting in the western skyline a real deal drive-in theater that is still in business and still operating daily.  It’s the Winchester Drive-in!  The Winchester Drive-in was built and is still owned by the Shanbour Family. It has been in business and has remained in that same location since 1968.  The Winchester Drive-in has survived a dying breed.  There were at one time 95 drive-in theaters in the state of Oklahoma; but now only seven remain in operation in the state. Oklahoma City is down to just this one drive-in theater.  This drive-in still caters to the drive-in nostalgia of old to include the speakers for the cars, popcorn, soft drinks, hotdogs, and hamburgers to name only a few.  Showing this week:  ‘Imagine That’ starring Eddie Murphy; ‘The Taking of Pelham 123’ starring Denzel Washington and John Travolta; and ‘Drag Me To Hell’ staring Alison Lohman. Doors open at 7:30pm. Admission:  $6-Adults; $3-Children ages 3-10; ages 2 and under – Free.  For the baby-boomers, this drive-in could be a walk down memory lane with your favorite beau or lady.  For today’s generation, it could be the making of new memories, a true find to share with the special someone in your life.  Just think about cuddling and hugging up in the back-seat of your chevy watching your favorite movie; hmmmmmm….it could be fun!  Check out a ‘True Find’ right in our backdoor – ‘The Winchester Drive-in’. Information on this theater is available online at the following link: http://www.winchesterdrive-in.com/movies.htm
