Deon Robertson Concert Review

CD Release Concert: Deon Robertson

From the soulful neo-sounds of Sean Johnson to the Huff-Enough energy of Oklahoma’s very own American Idol, the highly decibled atmosphere didn’t dissappoint the estimated 300 occupants that ingored the cold winter weather to fill the pews of Prospect Missionary Baptist Church and support the CD Release concert of Deon Robertson.

From the beginning to end, the featured artist and their musicians seamlessly flowed in and out of praise to worship, old school to modern gospel, giving all who listened an appeasing variety to the highly anticipated event.

And with all that said, the night truely belonged to Mr. Robertson, whose vocal confidence and relaxed demeanor allowed him to share his gift with the world. Flawlessly manuevering several octives while tickling the ears and souls of his captivated audience, Deon stood on the stage, mic in hand, and delivered a wondeful message through song that reminded everyone of why he loves to sing, and most importantly, for who he loves to sing.

BasementSeven applauds Mr. Deon Robertson in a successful CD Release Concert and will continue to encourage him in his musical efforts.

Sean C. Johnson Performing “Well Done”

wellseanI had the awesome privilege to emcee Sean’s release concert for his new “HOT” album. This was a really good concert. Sean sang his heart out. It was held at the UCO Jazzlab in Edmond, Oklahoma. The crowd was thick. Bunch of fun!

Dancing with Michael Jackson: What!

Of course, I grew up watching Michael Jackson when he was KING. His videos moved the house. I wanted to wear one glove. His jacket was on my birthday wish list. There was nothing greater than doing the backslide on stage. So when I watched this 8 minute footage, I felt these kat’s desire to dance with one of the best of all-times. I appreciate the art factor in this opportunity.

Michelle Starr: Invisible Children Benefit

Yes, it’s me. Heady. What’s good? So, when I learned about the Invisible Children Benefit, I was intrigued and wanted to learn more. I’m all for these kind of events i.e. events that are making a difference. Once I learned that Michelle Starr was involved, I jumped at the chance to interview her. I have always thought she was pretty cool from a distance. So, this interview gave me the opportunity to learn about a great event and a super cool person.

Heady: Let’s get straight to business here. How cool is a name like Michelle Starr? Is that your real name? If not, how did it come about?

Michelle Star: Haha! I’m loving this first question. I sometimes feel like a big fat liar when people ask me this. No, it was the radio name I chose 8 years ago when I started DJing on KOKF 90.9fm (Hit Music Radio – Before it turned into Air1). A lady that worked there told me for safety sake some of them chose to change their last name and I have always – and always will be – a big fan of stars, so there you have it. :)

H: Who are you listening to right now as for bands?

MS: Man, I’m so picky lately! My 3 favorites as of now are MuteMath, The Bird and the Bee and the new Family Force 5 is still blowing my face off. I’m trying to find a good rock band I can fall in love with though, so if you have any suggestions throw them at me!

H: What do you think about the music scene here in Oklahoma City?

MS: Hmm… I haven’t been a part of it much lately, and I don’t think I’m out enough to hear of some of it, but I think a lot of it went down after we lost the station because there had always been that constant local push. I hear from old listeners a lot that they miss having something to do every weekend that won’t get them into trouble. And I must say, poetry nights are really amazing, can’t lie!

H: Do you have a favorite local artist?

MS: Ya know, I don’t have an absolute favorite, but I will say that regardless how great I think they sound, as long as their vision is solid and they are striving for the positive messages on and off stage – those are the ones I love the most. My local artist friends are too numerous to name and are so terrific, but I don’t want to say any for fear I’ll forget someone!

H: Tell me a little about an organization that I believe you’re a part of and that’s U.R.G.E. What’s up U.R.G.E.? How can people get connected?

Urge is every last Sunday of the month! I absolutely believe in Urge. No matter where you come from or what you do, this singles get together is the place to be. Everyone is just so welcoming and friendly. We all make it a point to get around to as many people as possible so we can introduce ourselves and find out more about them. This year we’re taking it a little deeper than the previous. We all feel like we’re growing together just like the vision of Urge has always been – Uniting, Relating, Growing and Encouraging. I’m so excited to see where Urge propels us all to. Connect at http://www.myspace.com/urgetogether.

H: Okay. Real business. Tell us a little about Invisible Children.

MS: Invisible Children started as an online awareness campaign to alert the World about children in Northern Uganda who are being abducted into the Lord’s Resistance Army and forced to fight against Central East Africa. It is now a global wide movement that orchestrated an event called the Rescue, April 25 in 100 cities, including OKC. Something has to be done about child soldiers and we are hoping to help fund this outreach.

H: Is there a website for this organization?

MS: Yes. It will tell you everything you want to know – also how to get more involved. http://www.invisiblechildren.com

H: There will be a benefit concert on the 15th. Can you tell us a little about it?

MS: The Invisible Children Benefit Show will be Friday the 15th at Frontline Church – 714 N. Broadway Avenue, downtown. With Sherree Chamberlin (Indie/Folk/Acoustic), Adam L. and the Live Society (Jazz) & Dr. Pants (Acoustic). All proceeds will go directly to Invisible Children. Hosted by Westmoore High School Invisible Children Club & Filament. Come out and support.

H: Are these local bands performing?

MS: Yes they are. Check out Sherree Chamberlin at http://www.myspace.com/thesherreechamberlainband..
I believe Adam L. has been at Poetry Night and I don’t have anything on Dr. Pants but I do hear he’s good!

H: Will all the funds go toward the mission?

MS: Indeed. Westmoore has been wanting us to put this show on for them for a couple of years now specifically for that reason.

H: After the benefit concert, what’s next for Michellestarr or is it Michelle Starr?

MS: Put the space in the name if you feel like getting fancy! :) There are a couple other people in the planning of this show – Jacob Mann (former 91 DJ as well-”JRock”), Derek Davidson, Jessyca Ramsey and Michael Pennza. We’ve created Filament- A promotion company to start doing more of these shows. That’s pretty much what I’ll be up to for the next few months.

As for what’s happening directly after the concert? I’ll be grabbin some sushi!

H: How can you be contacted if someone would like more information about the concert or urge?

MS: Email me at meeshstarr@yahoo.com, www.myspace.com/michellestarr, facebook or twitter – michellestarr

H: Everyone go out an support if you can. Thanks Michelle Starr!
